Nigel Howlett’s stylised, figurative drawings and paintings draw on elements of the surreal and uncanny to explore the complexities and nuances of human experience. Many of Howlett’s recent works evolved as a direct response to the strangeness of the past few years in relation to the pandemic as well as wider political and social issues, and explore the psychological impacts both from a personal and collective point of view. His work currently centres around a faceless character who appears dressed in a sleek, futurist jumpsuit with matching boots and metallic gloves. While this character is anonymous and cartoon-like in physicality, the body language is highly expressive and as the viewer, we find ourselves able to instinctively understand and relate to their actions. The compositions are strikingly cinematic and minimal, employing symbolism to evoke a distinct emotional state or experience without prescribing a specific meaning. This symbolic visual language is inspired by the artist’s interest in mysticism, spirituality and nature, but also appeals to our shared humanity and ability to communicate beyond the verbal. Howlett works almost exclusively in monochrome, and the sections of empty space create a sense of silence and stillness. While the scenes are meticulously built up in layers, sketched and planned before the final piece is executed, Howlett leaves evidence of his mark-making process, drawing attention to both his physical presence and the image’s materiality. As such, the works invite a slow, meditative viewing experience that counters the rapid consumption of digital imagery, and the restlessness of contemporary culture.
