The work of New-York based Iranian artist Arghavan Khosravi is defined by contradiction.
The artist constructs amalgamations of different materials and techniques juxtaposing symbols and cultural references, rendering each piece inherently intense and thematically charged. Her practice is intrinsically linked to her personal life; a paradoxical childhood and the duality she experienced living in Iran. Her paintings often revisit the double life she led in her teenage years; being restricted by Islamic Law in public while able to express herself freely in private.
These biographical works are multilayered collages of opposing elements tied together by a thin red line. This physical red cord is a significant theme throughout Arghavan’s work, symbolizing the lines drawn by oppressive theocratic power. The red rope of repression literally confines and constricts the painting.

For her collaboration with Case Studyo, Arghavan chose to explore a medium that hits close to home and the traditions of her native culture, Persian tapestry.
Such traditional references are woven deeply into the artist’s work, every choice of material is well considered and bears meaning. In the original painting, on which this edition is based, a hand wood block printed fabric called Qalamkar was used as the canvas.
The painting was made right before the pandemic. In hindsight its sense of uncertainty, feeling stuck and being unable to move forward seems prophetic as only a few weeks later large parts of the world went into lockdown.

The edition uses the properties and aspects of various fibers such as wool, viscose, lurex, cotton and acrylic to allow a subtle transcription of the original work.
It is made of two panels, woven separately and sewn together to enhance a feeling of superposition, while carefully matching the two sides to obtain a continuous image.
The tassels are then twisted and knotted by hand, and a red waxed cotton cord is meticulously applied on the assembled piece.
